LEGENDARY BOXING COACHES — 01: CUS D'AMATO

Cus D'Amato (1908-1985) built champions from the fundamentals up.

Floyd Patterson. Jose Torres. Mike Tyson. Three world champions, all in the International Boxing Hall of Fame. Patterson won Olympic gold in 1952 and became the youngest heavyweight champion at 21 in 1956.

Torres won the light-heavyweight world title in 1965. Tyson became the youngest heavyweight champion at 20 in 1986, a year after Cus died. The lesson is the peek-a-boo guard. Gloves close to the cheeks. Elbows tight to the ribs. Chin tucked, eyes forward through the guard. And the head never still.

Slip. Roll. Stay balanced. Jab from the guard, cross behind it, fire in combinations, then reset the guard. Cus even numbered the punches so combinations could be drilled clean: 1 left hook, 2 right hook, 3 left uppercut, 4 right uppercut, 5 left hook to the body, 6 right hook to the body.

Defence becomes offence. Head movement makes the opening. And Cus trained the mind like the hands. Fear is natural. Every fighter feels it. The work is to control it, stay disciplined, and stay in position. The hero and the coward feel the same fear. The difference is what you do with it.

Take it into your training. Guard first. Always. Hands up, chin tucked, elbows in. Move your head. Jab, cross, combinations. Reset the guard.
