CAESARS PALACE. THE SUPER FIGHT. 🏛️🥊
Before there was a permanent arena, Caesars Palace built one — a temporary outdoor stadium on the tennis courts, put up for the big fight and taken down after. On April 6, 1987, it held one of the most argued-about fights ever: Sugar Ray Leonard vs Marvelous Marvin Hagler for the WBC middleweight title.
Leonard had been out of the ring for three years. No tune-up. Hagler had defended his title 12 times. Leonard won a split decision — 115-113 and 118-110 for Leonard, 113-115 for Hagler — and people are still arguing about it today. The punch stats tell their own story: Leonard landed 306 of 629 (49%). Hagler landed 291 of 792 (37%).
Here is the lesson. Four fundamentals, one fight:
GUARD — Hagler walked forward all night, cutting the ring down. Leonard kept his gloves high, his chin tucked and his elbows in, and he never stood still in front of the champion. A tight guard while you move buys you the next exchange.
JAB — Leonard scored again and again with his left jab. The jab finds the range, measures the distance, and tells you when to throw. No jab, no setup.
CROSS — Behind the jab came the right cross, straight down the middle. Feet set, shoulder and hip turned, drive from the back foot. Then move. The cross is the answer, not the question.
COMBINATIONS — Leonard's pattern: combination, disengage, retreat on his feet, repeat. And in the final 30 seconds of rounds, sharp flurries — fresh in the judges' minds as the bell rang. Finish every round like it counts, because it does.
Fundamentals win big fights. They won in a palace built for one night, and they work in your living room too.
